Florence is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany, and of the province of Florence. It is the most populous city in Tuscany and has a population of 364,779 (696,767 in the urban area).
The city lies on the Arno River and is known for its history and its importance in theMiddle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance, the city is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance; in fact, it has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages. It was long under the de facto rule of the Medici family. From 1865 to 1870 the city was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy.
Florence – the Basics
Your private English speaking guide will pick you up at your hotel at a pre-determined time for a basic walking tour of the city. Your first stop will be the Piazza del Duomo, where you will visit the Cathedral, the Campanile and the Baptistery. Then you will walk to the Piazza Signoria the ‘political’ stage of Florence, finally you head over to the Accademia to visit the Statue of David.
Your private English speaking will pick you up at a pre-determined time at your hotel for a walk over to the Galleria degli Uffizi; this is considered one of the finest art museums in the world. Here you will see works by Michelangelo, Tintoretto, Rembrandt, Rubens and many other famous artists.
The Churches of Florence
Your private English speaking guide will pick you up at a pre-determined time at your hotel. You will visit the more famous and the lesser known churches of Florence. Your stops will include the Church of San Lorenzo, the Capelle Medicee, Santa Maria Novella, Santa Croce and Santo Spirito.
